What is the BTC Mempool?
As defined in our crypto glossary, a mempool (or memory pool) is where pending transactions are stored before they are written to the blockchain. You can measure the size of the mempool in either "number of transactions", or the "size" that these pending transactions take up (usually in megabytes or kilobytes). The Bitcoin Mempool has become a convenient way to indicate how "backed up" the Bitcoin network is. A big jump in the size of the mempool may have several implications:- It will generally take longer for your transaction to be confirmed (written) on the blockchain.
- Transaction Fees will rise, as people will pay more to skip the line.
- There is a sudden increase of on-chain activity.
- The market is about to get volatile (if it hasn't already).
- Someone is spamming the network with large amounts of tiny transactions for either political or economic gain.

Historically, the BTC Mempool size is an important crypto indicator, often lining up with Bitcoin price spikes, changes in market volatility and a renewed interest in Bitcoin forks (such as Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin SV).
2023 Update: With the recent Taproot upgrade, monitoring the BTC Mempool Size has become more relevant than ever. Bitcoin is increasingly entering the world of DeFi and smart contracts, causing a renewed discussion around block space and transaction fees. A new ordinals protocol has helped find a market for NFTs on Bitcoin, and a BRC-20 standard is rapidly being adopted to enable tokens to be traded on the BTC blockchain. All this equates to one thing, a rising mempool size as the fight for block space intensifies.
