Bitcoin Halving Alert
When will the Bitcoin Halving occur, and how can I get notified when it does?
What is the BTC Halving?
As defined in our crypto glossary, a halving refers to an infrequent event where the reward for mining gets cut in half. In the case of Bitcoin, the block mining reward halves every 210,000 blocks. The next scheduled Bitcoin halving date should occur in roughly March, 2024 when the block number (or block height) reaches 840,000. At this point, the coin reward will decrease from 6.25 down to 3.125 BTC. However, this projected date is just an estimate, as the amount of time it takes to mine a block is irregular. This will be the fourth Bitcoin halving event, the last one occurring at a block height of 630,000. The fifth will occur at a block height of 1,050,000 and likely be in 2028. The block reward will then be reduced down to 1.5625 BTC.
Why does the BTC Halving matter?
That's a very good question! The halving has some interesting economic implications. Typically, when a miner receives Bitcoin for mining a new block, they immediately sell it in order to recoup the cost of hardware and electricity (and hopefully turn a profit). When the amount of Bitcoin being introduced into the ecosystem gets cut in half, the amount being sold by miners also gets cut in half. This essentially reduces the downward selling pressure that is consistently applied to the market. This can help fuel a large price movement upward. Many have lofty predictions for what the next halving will mean for the price of Bitcoin (and the market as a whole). There is historical president for these predictions, given that every previous halving events ended up being fantastic times to buy Bitcoin. A huge bull market quickly followed every time. The following chart illustrates a similar prediction for the last cycle, and we all know how that turned out.

No one ultimately knows what will happen when the next Bitcoin halving occurs, but there is no question that the halving is an incredibly important crypto indicator, and it's something to watch closely.
